This one comes to you as I sit on the balcony of my hotel in Langkawi, Malaysia. I’m watching the last sunset before leaving tomorrow.
Here’s a view of what I’m seeing:
I know, I told you I’d be in your inbox with Capricorn Season horoscopes (I didn’t forget), but I did think it would be more valuable to drop by for the New Moon instead.
It’s a woman’s (or anyone’s, for that matter) prerogative to change her mind, right?
Which brings me to my 2024 philosophy.
I didn’t set a new year’s resolution—it’s been a long while since I’ve had the urge to do so, and I’m not about to start again—but I do like the idea of a word or phrase that will softly carry me through the year.
And this year, that word is presence.
I chose this word because it doesn’t lock me into any unrealistic expectations of what I should be. It doesn’t let me feel as though I’m not good enough. It doesn’t make me feel small, but rather it’s a reminder to pause when I feel the inner voice telling me what I should be, or when I get caught in the feeling of unworthiness.
It’s a coming home to self.
It’s exactly what this solo trip to Malaysia has been giving me. Presence. Coming home to myself.
This is also why I wasn’t one of those voices in your inbox talking about setting intentions and resolutions, or overwhelming you by being one extra name on your email inbox, because this wasn’t the vibe. I deleted so many of those emails without even opening them the first week of this year.
Now, if you did feel called to set an intention or lean into your New Year’s resolution—great! And if like me, you didn’t feel like doing any of that because you were too busy trying to keep your head above water while trying to declutter your life and make space for the deep karmic cleanse happening now—also great!
Wherever this finds you, know that you are exactly where you’re meant to be.
We don’t do pressure over here. We have enough of that already, trying to keep up with life, inflation, and doing the right thing while still somehow feeling as though we’re doing it all wrong—that’s a full time job already.
So, with that being said, welcome to the New Moon in Capricorn, which was exact at 6:57am ET—and is still continuing as I write this.
This New Moon is significant, and there’s a reason you may be feeling heavy. There’s a lot of energy in the Saturn ruled sign of Capricorn. The sun and moon (this is what makes a new moon), Mars, and Pluto are all putting in the work!
Capricorn is represented by the sea goat and what a lot of people don’t realise is that Capricorn is just as much emotional and intuitive as it is determined and ambitious.
I often hear Capricorn described as the masculine (and I get why), but it is actually an earth sign, which is one of the feminine elements. When we have a new moon in Capricorn, we need to be connected to what we’re striving for, otherwise we will be climbing a mountain to nowheresville, fast.
Connecting to the heart is a crucial step in manifestation that often gets missed.
This is work I do with my coaching clients—we get really clear on what the goal is, and then I lead them into their emotional realm to connect with the feelings associated with the goal—usually this leads us to find their goal was never actually what they thought they wanted, but it was what they thought they should have because “if I have this I will be ______.” Leading us to what they actually want.
We need to feel the feelings associated with who we want to be—which is why a lot of empty resolutions don’t work. A quick google search told me that 80% of resolutions made, fail by February.
It’s because we don’t actually care about the things we’re striving for—they’re usually coming from an external source (expectations from parents, society, friends, social media, etc.).
The sea goat knows it has to dive deep to get to the root of the mission—the why.
Capricorn sits at the top of the chart, it’s our most external facing successes—it’s our career, our status; the image we show the world—which is probably why a lot of people describe this as the masculine, because the masculine has been the figure we associate with these traits. The man has been the one going out to bring home the bacon, while mom stayed at home. Capricorn is the bones and the structure, the branches of the tree extending outward.
Cancer is on the opposite side at the very bottom of the chart—it represents our roots, our ancestors, our family, and our subconscious. It’s the roots that connect us to our inner world and our bloodline—the roots that support the Capricornian branches to extend outward.
Today, I travelled through the mangroves of the Kilim Geoforest Park, and the guide was explaining that the trees will continue to grow and extend their roots to support the trees growth upwards. They also live in salt water, taking the fresh water after filtering most of the salt that enters the roots.
This feels fitting for this new moon, as Pluto is at the last degree of Capricorn and the moon squares the nodes of our destiny.
This is our opportunity to filter out what isn’t supporting our growth.
Are there places you’re putting your energy where it isn’t respected?
Are your hands in too many pots, ruining the integrity of the dishes?
Where can we let go of what we don’t need, in order to make space for what we’re destined to do?
In 2004, there was a tsunami here (and in surrounding areas in Asia) and these mangroves saved the island from destruction. The roots of the mangroves could absorb the swells, they were strong, and they protected the community.
This is the high road of Capricorn—it’s able to take on an abundance of water (feeling the depths of emotion) in order to complete their goal with integrity and pride.
The Capricorn/Cancer axis is associated with our parents (or reparenting ourselves). Some of us are traversing the waters as adults, without having had any education or connection with our emotional bodies. We were told to suck it up, not to cry, and now we’re disconnected. We’re unable to connect with our inner world, and the branches of our trees can’t withstand the waves.
We get frustrated and we give up, or we do our job half assed and complain the whole way through. We’re not living with integrity, and because we are our government and systems, we are failing our communities in a big way.
We’ve been too busy climbing that mountain to nowheresville to look around and realise we don’t even want to be on this mountain to begin with, and that it’s not very fun once we get to the top—alone.
This New Moon has a karmic aspect to it with it being in a Saturn ruled sign, we are invited to get serious about the path we’re on. There’s an invitation to ask ourselves if the mountain we’re climbing is the one we actually want to be on. If so, it’s time to put in the real work to make it happen by first letting go of everything that is holding us back. There’s an element of honesty that has to be present in the process, and it can be painful.
The moon is also squaring the nodes of the moon. We’re at a point of tension, where part of us wants to ride the wave we’ve been riding, but it’s no longer sustainable to be on it—it’s as if we’re paddling against the current. If you’re feeling pulled in a different direction—listen to it. You may not have all the answers, but there’s an important message at this deeply intuitive time.
If you didn’t sit with yourself at the new year, now might be the time to do some reflection. Set a timer and write down your aspirations, no matter how big or small, but take the pressure out of it at first. Just let your hand move without your brain trying to talk you out of it—you can review the list later with your logic.
The ruler of the new moon is in Pisces—there’s a spiritual aspect to our mission. There’s also a big possibility that our boundaries are weaker than they should be. Take some time to assess where your energy is going. Mars is in Capricorn, and it likes to be here, so we have the ability to stay focused and on task—tap into the tunnel vision and block out everything that holds you back.
And lastly, Pluto is finishing its time in Capricorn (for now), which means we are releasing deep, dark, karmic gunk—collectively and individually. If you’re feeling blah, lean into it, give yourself space, and consider facing the shadows that emerge. We’re closing a chapter that began in 2008. Think about all that has happened in the area Capricorn resides in your own chart to know more of what this means for you.
I explained a bit of what it means collectively here if you want to read more.
Horoscopes through the signs
Check your sun and rising sign
Aries: career, reputation, status
Are you climbing the right mountain, Aries? Take a moment to check in with your inner world as a temperature check on how you really feel. You’ve been letting go of catering to the feelings of others, and have the opportunity to fully lean into your true self—turn up the heat and embody that bad ass I know you are. Don’t be scared to reroute, you’ve got all the tools you need.
Taurus: travel, higher education, world views
Your belief systems are undergoing a reboot and are possibly making you question everything. Leaning into your spiritual side will offer any additional support you need. Don’t be afraid to retreat if needed, or take a trip, or a course to expand your mind. You’re letting go of the need to be everything for everyone, and it’s time to put your your own needs above all else.
Gemini: shared resources, transformation, intimacy
You’ve been going through the depths, Gemini. This could feel uncomfortable as your airy nature may rather skirt on the surface, but there is an invitation to look under the hood to see what’s up. Facing the dark parts of you will offer big rewards as you step into your truest self. The more you lean into your heart, the easier it will be to feel supported by (or to support) your community.
Cancer: relationships, negotiations, contracts
This new moon is lighting up your relationships—whether romantic, business, or one on one friendships, there’s an opportunity for new seeds to be planted. It’s important to remember you are who you spend your time with, so choose wisely. There may be people you need to distance yourself from in order to be open for new connections.
Leo: daily habits, work, health
Are your daily habits and routines supporting your goals or are there tendencies you need to leave in the past? You may feel an extra push of motivation to change up your routine. Take an audit of how you’re currently spending your time and compare it to your goals, are the two working together or are there shifts that need to take place?
Virgo: romance, creativity, children
It’s time to take your own joy seriously, Virgo. I know you like to make sure everyone is taken care of and things are running smoothly, but are you taking care of your heart? It may feel uncomfortable to lean in to joy, but it will offer you a new level of self understanding, allowing you to relate more deeply with those you love. Make a plan to have some fun, purely for the sake of it, for you and nobody else.
Libra: home, family, lineage
There’s a restructuring happening deep inside of you, Libra. You may feel called to connect with yourself and/or your family during this time, this may even be a time where you decide to physically move location or clear out your environment. You’re letting go of pieces of you that no longer fit who you are today, it’s okay to take some time to nurture your roots as you shed your leaves.
Scorpio: communication, transportation, learning
If you’ve been holding back, or if your words don’t match what you mean, it’s time to reassess. It’s time to say what you mean, and mean what you say. When you are honest with others about your plans, you may find new doorways open up to opportunities that are in alignment with your true goals. Let go of any old stories that don’t support your growth, and lean into the habits that will lead to your goals being reality.
Sagittarius: possessions, security, worth
Today marks a new seed planted to a solid foundation. You may feel motivated to take the steps to secure your future goals, and it requires your emotional body to be tended to as well. When your roots are strong, you will feel more secure in yourself. This sense of self worth will lead you to let go of those who aren’t supportive, feeling confident to make steps towards your true joy.
Capricorn: self, appearance, body
This is your new moon, Capricorn! Happy birthday! This is your season and it’s time to get serious about yourself. It’s okay to change course, and to follow your true path—even if it means leaving something behind that you once worked so hard to achieve. You have the tenacity to be whatever you want to be, as long as it’s heart centred.
Aquarius: retreat, solitude, spirit
It’s time to tend to your spirit. You may feel the need to isolate or to take a step back and bathe in your own energy for a minute. If you’re feeling a bit lost, know that you have all the answers within. It’s a great time to meditate and call on support as you move through this initiation. You’re letting go of old belief systems and preparing to level up.
Pisces: friends, community, big dreams
It’s time to plant the seed of your true dreams, Pisces. If you’ve been climbing a ladder or mingling with those you don’t resonate with, it may be time to jump off the bandwagon. There’s a part of you that’s letting go of the need to please others, while stepping into your true power as you recognise your worth. Know that as you align yourself with true support, you will feel more like who you were always meant to be
Sending you so much love this Capricorn season. It’s a tendency for us to feel like we’re not doing enough during this time, but I want to stress how important it is to give yourself time as we move through this deep cleansing of the gunk as Pluto moves through the last degree of Capricorn. We’re being recalibrated to our true path, and this can be uncomfortable.
If all else fails, be present.
I’m writing this comment outside of the Capricorn new moon, but I clicked on the post because I’m a Capricorn and love reading about astrology. I LOVED your mangroves metaphor so much. As a Capricorn Sun / Cancer Moon, there’s something in my personal understanding of that axis that clicked into place even more. I can’t even put words to it, but thank you! 🙏🏻
Kaitlyn, I love your interpretation of this Capricorn new moon. Everything you've said, I've felt it at home. 😵😵💫 It's been a wild ride with this Pluto in Saturn energy! I cannot help but notice how uncanny the timing around closing the chapter that started in 2008. Thank you for weaving so much wisdom in one article (and also for sharing your beautiful travel photos)!
